It's been about a year and a half since I last posted. I suck at this! But now I'm going to try again. I guess I'll just use this post to give a disjointed update on the events since November 2010.
Last you heard from me, we had just endured a tragedy at work. This affected me deeply and I've been writing a fictional novel about suicide in Hong Kong. The writing is quite slow-going because the topic is so heavy... but I'm finding it therapeutic.
I just signed another contract for two more years in Hong Kong. It all seems a bit surreal. I really thought I'd stay for one year, break the contract and go home. But no, I'm sticking around. The job may not be the most stimulating, creative teaching job in the world, but I really do love it. They are pretty much glued to the textbook and do a lot of rote memorization... not a lot of room for exploration and discovery, but I try to bring fun into the classroom whenever I can.
Harold and I got married last August. It was a fairytale wedding in a garden. Over Christmas, we went on an awe-inspiring honeymoon to South Africa. The landscapes and animals were like nothing we'd ever seen before. We rented a car and drove across the southern coast. AMAZING! We went caving, shark cage diving, scuba diving in the Cape Town Aquarium predator tank, crocodile cage diving, played with wildcats, did safaris, he went bungee jumping... it was quite the exhilarating trip.... the sort of trip that really reminds you that you're alive and that life is so amazing. I will never tire of travelling with Harold.
Oh wow, I should back up. It's been so long since I posted, I am actually behind one year's worth of vacations. LAST Christmas, we went to Thailand. This involved elephant riding, para-sailing, and a lot of pad thai on the beach. We also went to Macau (the Vegas of Asia) last year and stayed at the Venetian. I saw my first Cirque du Soleil show there. Man, I wish I could do acrobats like that. I guess a good start would be actually going to the gym. I suck at going to the gym ALMOST as much as I suck at blogging.
Harold spent some time at home doing school both last year and this year. While he was gone, I kept myself busy by travelling with girlfriends to both Taiwan and India. There are Facebook albums for all the above-mentioned vacations except South Africa (well, there's one album of SA... but we have SO many pictures to go through still.) Harold had to go back to Windsor the day after our honeymoon and he just got back two weeks ago... we really haven't had time to sort through the 10,000+ pictures.
Aside from travelling, I joined a choir and have also become an avid karaoke-er.... I know, I've always been a bit of a karaoke junkie, but the love is much more intense now! When in Asia...
Well, as I've said, this is just an overview of the last little while. I'm going to start updating regularly... at least once a week. That will make the blog read more like an actual account of my life, thoughts and feelings and less like a history textbook with dates, places and corresponding events.
